Industry Insight: Connecting The Remote and Rural

Satellite communications have become cool again thanks to a new breed of LEO or low Earth orbit satellites that are the staple of Tesla’s Starlink constellation and Amazon’s Project Kuiper which received FCC approval in July of 2020. These satellites are deployed in the thousands with the purpose of providing global broadband coverage. However, the question of economics is a question that yet needs to be answered. What are the services that will enable massive LEO space communications projects recoup their investments? What are the competitive dynamics that will play out between terrestrial and extraterrestrial communications?

neXt Curve is joined by Virgilio Fiorese, rural broadband expert at Radisys Corporation to explore the following topics:

  • Techno-economic realities of rural and remote connectivity – We discuss the economic dynamics and challenges of bringing connectivity and digital transformation to remote and rural areas. We also talk about the technology and spectrum policies that are opening up new possibilities for connecting the underserved parts of the world.
  • What is the big deal about LEO (low Earth orbit) satellite communications? – We discuss the excitement surrounding projects such as Starlink and Project Kuiper that are driving the hype of LEO space communications. What is LEO and what is everyone so amped up about?
  • What are the new connectivity and monetization possibilities in space? – With the advent of 5G, which promises to connect our rural and remote areas, what could LEO space communications do that can’t be done with the next generation mobile wireless technology and network? We discuss the known and the possible services and business models that will enable the likes of Starlink to monetize their massive investment in LEO constellations made up of thousands of satellites.
  • The opportunities and challenges of space-based broadband – We discuss the headwinds that will LEO constellation operators will face to realize a viable business model. What are the competitive threats and opportunities that terrestrial networks will pose as 5G continues to evolve and deployments expand across the globe?
