Digital Reinvention – Part 1: What Makes Digital Reinvention Different?

Special guests from IBM joined neXt Curve to discuss the future of digital, their thesis on “Digital Reinvention” and what enterprises need to do as they look past digital transformation to capitalize on new opportunities to reinvent their businesses and their industry in this first installment in a 3-part webcast series.

On May 2nd, 2018, neXCurve hosted a webcast panel discussion with special guest from IBM to discuss the Institute of Business Value (IBV)’s research and white paper entitled “Using Data by Design: Digital Reinvention in Electronics”.  Cristene Gonzalez-Wertz, Director of Electronics Research, Scott Burnett, Director of IBM Global Markets, and Reza Firouzbakht, Partner and Digital Strategy Leader, IBM GBS shared the highlights of their research with Dean Freeman, Akshay Sharma and Jodi Starkman of neXCurve.

What Makes Digital Reinvention Different?

Over the last few decades, enterprises have been applying information technology to individual resources and processes to realize operational efficiencies.  This “digitalization” of the core of the business was delivered primarily through ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software provided by vendors such as SAP, Oracle and Siebel (acquired by Oracle in 2005).  With the advent of the Dotcom era and the arrival of electronic commerce and business technologies, enterprises began to undergo a digitally-enabled transformation of the way that they interfaced with customers and created new, personalized customer experiences.  Digital Reinvention takes an enterprise a step further by helping businesses, “reconceive how and with whom they operate and how they engage with their environment.”

How are Businesses Digitally Reinventing Themselves?

Companies in the electronics industry are in a unique position in that their products and services enable the digitization of other industries whether it is healthcare, media, oil & gas and pretty much every other industry you can think of.  Electronics companies that are taking the leap of Digital Reinvention are seeking new approaches to products, processes and ecosystem participations enabled by digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and the cloud.  They are building platforms on top of their digital core to leverage data sourced within and outside the organization to create new services and value.

Electronics companies that are digitally reinventing themselves are using data to:

  • Achieve personalization based on deep insights about users and environments
  • Proactively anticipate needs and act up on them
  • Provide a consistent user experience across various form factors.
